After Marianne's first ever horse riding lesson, she gets extremely sick and is unable to walk around and play wihout getting dizzy and collapsing.

She then finds a magical penand she starts to draw and each night her dreams are of her in the picture.

 Then she draws a boy who she had heard about from her governess.
